Functional Movement Systems

At Carolina Athletic Development (CAD) individuals are screened using The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and LEVELS system. The FMS is the product of an exercise philosophy known as Functional Movement Systems, originally created by Gray Cook. The LEVELS system is exclusive to CAD and is the product of Lee Howard who has developed an injury prevention and training concept individualized to the participant. These exercise philosophies are based on sound science, years of innovation, and current research.

How it Works – Simplifying Movement

The FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents essential movement patterns key to normal function.

The FMS identifies functional limitations and asymmetries. These are issues that can reduce the effects of functional training and physical conditioning and distort body awareness.

The FMS generates the Functional Movement Screen Score, which identifies total body strengths and weaknesses in mobility, stability and motor control

CAD monitors The FMS score to track progress and identify exercises most effective to restore proper movement and build strength in each individual.

The FMS and LEVELS system has Widespread Benefits

The FMS and LEVELS program simplifies the concept of movement and its impact on the body. Its streamlined system has benefits for athletes, young and older adults wanting to be fit/active, post rehab patients, coaches, agents and more!!!

Evaluation – The screen identifies asymmetries and limitations, diminishing the need for extensive and costly testing and analysis. When combined with the LEVELS assessment and training platform, there is no better cost effective system for establishing a baseline of strengths and weaknesses supported with a comprehensive training program to improve performance and function.

StandardizationThe FMS creates a functional baseline to mark progress and provides a means to measure performance. The LEVELS system adapts ones training to the infinite changes unique to the person.

SafetyThe FMS quickly identifies dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed. It also indicates an individual’s readiness to perform intense exercise so that realistic goals can be set. The LEVELS system further breaks down training to right and left side differences, upper & lower body differences, strength and conditioning differences, and even takes into account injury history.

Corrective StrategiesThe FMS can be applied at any fitness level, simplifying corrective strategies of a variety of movement issues. It identifies specific exercises based on individual FMS scores to instantly create customized treatment and exercise plans.

Performance/ Fitness and MoreThe LEVELS system will customize the right type of training based on the individuals readiness and goals. Athletes of all ages can benefit through optimizing strength, speed, power, flexibility, athletic movement, injury prevention, and conditioning.

Adults can benefit by having a custom plan to cover a variety of needs: Fitness, optimizing weight , improving strength, improving energy, kick starting metabolism, or just simply moving and feeling better.

The FMS and LEVELS platform can also bridge the gap to get individuals back to a baseline once they have finished physical therapy or have been release by their medical professional for exercise.
